FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 16, 2023

SEATTLE, WA — Jorge L. Barón, a champion for human rights and outgoing executive director of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP), has officially declared his candidacy for King County Council District 4. With a proven track record of advancing justice, equity, and immigrant rights, Barón brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the local political landscape. Barón is launching his campaign with nearly $45,000 already raised.

As the Executive Director of NWIRP for the past 15 years, Barón has been on the front lines of the fight for immigrant rights, most notably instrumental in the halting of deportations in the aftermath of former President Trump’s 2017 travel ban. His work has touched the lives of countless individuals and families, empowering them to navigate the complex legal system and providing critical support during challenging times. Barón's commitment to inclusivity, fairness, and social justice has earned him widespread recognition as a tireless and effective advocate.

"Jorge has dedicated his career to fighting for justice and fairness for all,” said Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. “I have worked closely for years with Jorge and have seen firsthand his commitment to serving our communities and uplifting the voices of those who are often marginalized and forgotten. He will be an effective champion for progressive values and will serve all residents of his district and King County well."

Now, Barón aims to extend his impact by running for King County Council District 4. With his deep understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized communities, Barón will be a strong voice for equitable policies that address the needs of all residents. His candidacy is rooted in the belief that every individual, regardless of their background, deserves access to essential services, affordable housing, quality education, and a fair criminal legal system.

"I am honored to announce my candidacy for King County Council District 4," said Barón. "I firmly believe that our county's success lies in the well-being and empowerment of all its residents. I am committed to working collaboratively with community members, local leaders, and organizations to ensure that our policies prioritize equity, justice, and the values that make Martin Luther King Jr. County a welcoming and prosperous place for everyone."

Barón's campaign will focus on several key issues, including affordable housing, homelessness, transportation, the criminal legal system, and environmental sustainability. He aims to build partnerships across diverse communities, foster dialogue, and implement innovative solutions that address the pressing challenges facing King County.

Barón's leadership and dedication have garnered numerous accolades, including the MLK Medal of Distinguished Service from King County. His expertise and deep connections within the community make him an ideal candidate to represent King County residents in District 4.

Beyond his work, Jorge also has personal interests and hobbies including a deep love for nature, as well as a lifelong love of fútbol (soccer). Additionally, he finds solace in the Pacific Northwest wilderness through activities like backpacking, hiking, and snowshoeing, often sharing these experiences with his wife and children. He is a proud husband to Tyler, and father to Isabella, Luna, and Luca. Jorge is originally from Bogotá, Colombia, and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of thirteen.
